I want to make sure to credit Anne Lamott for the quote about not forgiving being like drinking rat poison and waiting for the rat to die. (On the full video I said it’s from her, but the clip software took it out.)
Forget forgiveness. It is NOT necessary to feel much, much better about being victimized. Pressure to forgive is what causes mental conflict and inner turmoil.
Hate is a real, valid emotion. It often times is the emotion that gives us the strength to carry on because it fuel adrenaline. It can give us the energy we need to get out of the bed we were put in by a perpetrator.
I do not forgive someone who hasn’t asked or isn’t sincere. Bullies love perceived weakness.
It’s just another burden that’s put on the victim because it’s rooted in Christian morality. And I left the manipulation of Catholicism over 50 years ago.
Instead, I just walk away and leave them in the dust, and I feel completely justified doing so. No guilt. Zero guilt. THAT is they key. Give yourself permission to hate. Get on with living your best life. Eventually, positive mental health overshadowed the hate. You become well, having honored ALL of your emotions for as long as you needed to feel safe, in “fight” mode.
A person who harms me now doesn’t get the benefit of my time, knowledge, money, or energy. I simply withdraw it, walk away, lesson learned, and let them see the back of my head
I’m not responsible for their well-being or soul. Only mine. No extra thinking or emotional drain. I just cut them off completely.
NOW I’m fine. I’m 68, and I just learned this last year after repeatedly forgiving abusers . Like I said, NOW I’m great, actually. Cut all the deadwood out of my life.
Thank you. I’ve got this short on save.
So true!
Thank you for your clarifications There’s a lot we all have to learn about forgiveness -a lot of things to clarify
The forgiver is not on this world.
Forgiveness is for the dead.
Defining the divine is the entire problem of non trust.
preaching 1 sided forgiveness is exetremly corrupt. if you promote forgiveness, why forgive the provoker and not the defender? why only 1 person only ever gets forgiven?
why is not the person whos been wronged who can get forgiveness?
you preach the dark ones heirarchy, and forgiving sin but no forgiving good.
in your words, only evil people need forgiveness and good people should be so lucky to forgive them and they should suffer and shut up.
Amen! Forgiveness is MY GIFT to ME! ❤ You no longer get to live rent free in my brain or heart.
I lived with complicated grief from a childhood trauma for almost 35 years before finding forgiveness. My life isn’t the same since. But first, we mourn, and we grieve. Peace be with you.
