Very true. Self-regulation & calm confidence in their own capacity to navigate through all life domains. To have healthy relationships with themselves and others, be open to new learnings, new experiences, and to be flexible & and resilient and resourceful in the face of life’s inevitable challenges is absolutely foundational.
Without this solid base , every step can be a painful struggle. Both to ourselves and others we impact.
My mother was a kindergarten teacher for almost 30 years, and she observed that parenting skills were steadily deteriorating across the 3 generations that passed through her school.
In the past, before our social relationships were remodelled around & post the industrial revolution, people lived in small close communities. Children had a ‘village’ to interact with. They had plenty of alternative parenting styles to observe and emulate if some aspects were lacking in their own. Today, most children are raised in isolated nuclear families, with intergenerational contacts increasingly sparse, limited, or completely lacking. This is Social Impoverishment and not how human beings are ‘wired’ over millennia to live.
After listening to all these stories and my own observations within my own clinical practice, including in child & adolescent mental health sector, I find I must conclude that whilst, yes, we can teach people to ‘Re-Parent’ themselves in healthier ways ( and we do!) ‘Parenting Skills Modules’ should also be taught in our schools as well as made available as a standard resource ( not stigma layered; “YOU are doing it wrong!”) to Every New Parent pre and post each birth.
